Drugs and budgets

Imagine you’re helping a young person devise a budget. You’ve stressed that they need to be honest and accurate about what they spend.

So they tell you that they are a regular, but not daily, user of cannabis. They spend around £40 a month on drugs.

Do you encourage them to include that in their budget? What are you colluding with if you do? What is the point of a budget if you don’t?

This is not a hypothetical dilemma. It’s a real situation faced by many youth workers as they try to encourage young people to take control of their finances.

Feel free to use the comment box to give your opinion and share approaches. Though apologies – I won’t approve them till the middle of next week. Short holiday & no blackberry till 19 September.
