Cash grants of £190 to mothers-to-be will start being paid in April. Claim forms for the tax-free, one-off payment are available now from midwives and doctors. To qualify, you must be at least 25 weeks pregnant, with a due-date on or after 6 April 2009.
The “health in pregnancy grant”, which comes from HM Revenue & Customs, will not affect tax credits or any other benefits. It is not means-tested.
The midwife or doctor fills in and signs their part of the form before giving it to you. You then have 31 days to fill in your bit and get the form to HMRC. Payments go directly into bank or building society accounts.
You can get a free text message or email reminder to help you remember to claim if you are not 25 weeks pregnant yet.
